Tower To Remove Liberal Bishops 1

LONDON, Sun. (10 a.m.)— The Church Assembly was considering a measure that would give a small cabal of bishops power to retire a liberal colleague of whose-views they disapproved, the Bishop of Birmingham (Dr Barnes) told a congregation in Birmingham Cathedral. “This could happen to a man for expressing his belief in Jonah's whale or Noah's ark,” he said. Dr Barnes said that the controversy about the measure had been “kept underground.” Power to remove a liberal bishop from his appointment could not be obtained without a change in the law, but if the Church Assembly sent to Parliament a measure to liquidate liberal bishops, it would be thrown out, “so it is proposed to send forward a measure bearing the innocent title, the Bishops (Retirement) Measure.”
