WSiangorei Wins Softball Shield

, The first match for a new shield—the Hallmond Softball Challenge Shield—to be contested by softball teams throughout Northland, was played on Saturday between teams from Dargaville and Whangarei at Dargaville.

Whangarei won 30—9 and is, therefore, the first team to hold the shield, although no stipulation has been made by the donor as to how it is to be played for. Whangarei women, who also travelled to Dargaville, lost to the local side 23—4. A cup donated by the United Machinists was the trophy. Next week-end an Auckland team is to play a Whangarei side on the Saturday and negotiations are in progress for it to play Dargaville on Sunday.
