Primary School Swimmers Break Nine Records
THE breaking of nine records at the annual swimming championships of the Whangarei Primary Schools Sports Association yesterday afternoon proved conclusively that the standard of swimming among the juveniles of the town and district is improving in a marked manner. Outstanding performer was Betty Clements, of the Whangarei Girls’ Intermediate High School, who was a class above the other girls of her age and established two new records. Miss Clements is the Auckland provincial tiny tots champion.
She clipped 4 l-5s off the 12 and under 13 record for 50yds, her new figure being 34 4-5 s as against 395. In the 33 l-3yd breaststroke, she recorded 30 4-5 s as against the old record of 335. v Other records breakers were:—
Judith Campi, girls under 8, 7 3-5 s (8 2-ss); B. Jordan, boys 9 and under 10, 19 2-5 s (19 4-ss); I. Courtney, boys 11 and under 12, 38 3-5 s (40s); J. Rita, boys under 14, 1.17 2-5 (1.25); Y. Edlington, girls, 10 and under 11, 24 4-5 s (25 4-ss); junior relay, Whangarei, 1.56 4-5 (2min); senior l’elay, Whangarei Boys’ Intermediate High School, 1.39 2-5 (1.46 1-5). 3 HOURS’ EXCITEMENT
It is most unlikely that the senior relay record will be recognised, as the team comprised four boys. The rules stipulate that each team shall comprise two boys and two girls. The programme of over 40 events was completed in three hours and provided an exciting experience for the children, and much pleasure for interested parents. * Concluding results were:— Tiny tots, girls under 8, final: J. Campi 1; R. Fairley 2; J. Marwick 3. Girls 8 and under 9, final: K. Carter 1; H. Dunn 2; J. Provan 3. Boys, 9 and under 10, final: B. Jordan 1; J. Houlihan 2: R. Johnstone 3. DIVING
