Slackening Of Employment

WASHINGTON, Fri. (12.20 p.m.)— An anticipated slackening of employment was the reason given today for a bill approved by the Senate Public Works Commitee for authorising expenditure of $40,000,000 on planning for future Federal buildings, and $30,000,000 to repair post offices and other buildings. Senator Davis Chavez, author of the new measure, said the purpose of planning would be to have the building schedule ready for an “expected period of slackening employment and construction.”

He said the idea was that the actual work would be undertaken “when conditions warrant.” At the same time Government experts said, for the first time today, that the current unemployment was not of the dangerous type that leads to a depression. They pointed to the recall of workers at several plants as straws indicating that the jobless trend may soon be halted and reversed. Officials of the United States Employment Service said jobless payments had declined for the week ended February 19.
