A. C. McKinnon Aged 85 Today
One of Northland’s pioneers, Mr A. C. McKinnon, of Whangarei, turned 85 yesterday. He was told by his doctor that he was good for another 15 years. Mr McKinnon's health is quite good, but unfortunately one of his legs is not, and he has had to use crutches for the last 17 years. "It’s no good when you can’t get about; no good at all,” he said this morning. He was born at Whareora. and built himself a four-roomed house in 14 days. Until he retired 16 years ago he had never taken a day’s holiday in his life—not even at Christmas, he said. On Christmas Day he was taken for a 50-mile car ride, visiting Matapouri and Hikurangi. He had not seen some of the places for 60 years and was amazed at the changes that had taken place. Because of his leg trouble he is forced to remain in his bach in Hardie Bros' yard most of the time. Fortunately his eyes and hearing are good, and he can read the paper and listen to his radio, taking particular interest in Parliament.
