Australian Squadron To Be Called Fleet

SYDNEY, Wed. (1 p.m.)—The acquisition of the aircraft-carrier Sydney has earned the Royal Australian Navy Squadron the title of Fleet. The Minister of the Navy (Mr W. J. Riordan) said that the title of commander of the squadron will be changed from January 1 to Flag Officer Commanding the Australian Fleet. His flag will be transferred from the cruiser Australia to Sydney when the carrier reaches Australian waters.

A fleet is defined as an organisation of various types of ships and naval aircraft capable of undertaking major operations.

Next year active ships of the Australian Fleet will consist of an aircraft carrier, an Bin-gun cruiser, five destroyers. three frigates, two tank landing ships, two survey ships and one tug.

Other vessels have been placed on the reserve.
