Holiday Hours For Shops, Offices, Utilities

PUBLIC utility, office and shopping hours for the holiday period in Whangarei (including emergency services) are as follows:

Doctors. —Closed during the statutory holidays, but urgent calls may be made at any time through the St John Ambulance station. Dentists. —Closed from Christmas Day, until. Monday. January 17. Mr R. Whatmough’s surgery will be open for urgent cases during that period, except on the statutory holidays. Borough Council. —Closed from December 25 to 2ti. Reopen on Wednesday. December 29, until' -I p.m. Fridaly. Closed from January 1 to 4. Reopen January 5. County Council.—Close midday, December 24. Reopen Monday. January 10.

Electricians,— Hours and holidays vary. In most, cases an emergency service will be operated throughout the holiday period.

Plumbers. —Closed for the usual days at Christmas and New Year. An emergency' service will be operated by some firms.

Post Office.— deliveries on Christmas Day, Monday or Tuesday or during the corresponding New Year period. Postal branch closed during the same days; but airmail letters received up to 8 a.m., and some surface mail to 8 a.m. on the Mondays, December 27 and January 3. Street boxes cleared 7 a.m. Monday. Telegraph office closed on Christmas Day. Telegrams accepted upstairs in the post office between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on December 27 and 2C and on January 1, 3 and 4. .Money order office and savings bank, rationing branch and oil fuel branch office closed during the six-day period. The telephone exchange will be open continuously.

Service Stations. —All open to 10 p.m.- Friday, December 24. Emergency petrol will be available as follows: December 25 and 26, Wylie’s Petrol Service; December-27 and 28, Adams’ Premier Service Stations. All open until 9 p.m. on Friday, December 31. January 1 and 2, Northern Tyre Co.. Ltd., January 3 and 4, Regent Service Station.

Registrar of births, deaths and marriages.—closed on Christmas Day, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Open for urgent business from Wednesday to Friday, December 29, 30 and 31. Reopen January 5. >' Rubbish Collection. —Residential refuse which would have been collected on Monday and Tuesday, December 27 and 28, will be collected on Wednesday, December 29 and refuse which would have been collected on* Monday and Tuesday, January 3 and 4, will be collected on Wednesday, January 5. Hotel, restaurant and boarding-house collections will be as usual. Chemists. —Sargent’s Pharmacy will be open from 7 to 8 p.m. from Christmas Day to the following Tuesday. December 25, 26, 27 and 28. Burfoot’s will be open from 7 to 8 p.m. on January 1,2. 3, and 4. Urgent tions will be available as usual. Bakers. —Bread will be baked and delivered on Friday, December 24, and supplies will be resumed on Wednesday, December 29. The same holiday arrangements will .apply over the New Year period. Retailers. —Close 9.30 p.m. on Friday, December 24; reopen on Wednesday, December 29; close 8.30 p.m. on Friday. December 31; reopen on Wednesday, January 5.

Butchers. —Cldse from 4, or 5 p.m. on Friday, December 24; reopen on Wednesday, December 29; close 4 or 5 p.m. on "Friday, December 31; reopen Wednesday, January 5.

Fruiterers. —Holidays will be observed on Christmas and New Year’s Days, but stocks will determine whether or not fruiterers’ shops will be open on the intervening days. Banks. —Close on Friday afternoon, December 24; reopen on Thursday. December 30: close on Friday afternoon, December 31 reopen on Wednesday. January 5.

Legal Offices. —Close on Thursday afternoon. December 23: reopen on Monday, January 17.

Northern Advocate. —The Advocate will not be published on Christmas Day and Ncw Year’s Day. Publication will be as usual on other holiday dates.

Mr J. R. Martin, who was Mayor of Invercargill in 1941 and 1942, died yesterday, 'aged 78. He was a member of the City Council from 1917 to 1921 and again from 1938 to 1941. From 1891 to 1896 he was a Southland representative Rugby footballer.
