Reclamation Work Near Town Basin

The Whangarei Harbour Board’s clamshell and bucket dredges which have been out of action for three weeks owing to minor breakdowns in the gear, are ready to recommence work on the reclamation that is being carried out between the Waiarohia Stream and the Port Whangarei road! The stream has been discharging just below the Town Basin, and the spoil has been taken up the stream with the incoming tide. The diversion canal which is being cut will bring the stream out in the reach to Limeburners Creek, obviating silting from the creek when it is in flood. Access will still be available to the various lime and sand yards which are supplied by barges using the stream. Some delay occurred in building the stop bank at the lower end of the reclamation as the mud from the creek bed was not firm enough to stand fhe pressure of water inside the banks. VALUABLE LAND As the overflow will be at the lower end, the banks are required to be strong at that point. When the reclamation has consolidated it will add another valuable block of land to that already reclaimed by the harbour board in the course of its dredging activities. The men who operate the dredges are handling the harbour board equipment which is being used on the Northern Steamship Company’s m.v. Goldfinder at Port Whangarei. When tlffey are no longer required there, they will commence work on the diversion canal. Goldfinder Cargo Unloading proceeded satisfactorily today on the phosphate cargo carried by the Northern Steamship Company's m.v. Goldfinder. At the time of going to press it was estimated that the remaining few tons of the 270 carried from Sfax, North Africa, would be - unloaded by 4 p.m. into the railway trucks on the wharf at Port Whangarei. Oruaiti Chapel The September. 1948, issue of the London magazine. Wide World contains a photograph of the Oruaiti Chapel, the “smallest church in New Zealand,” now located in Kamo Road. Whangarei. Although the chapel was moved to Whangarei some years ago, the text accompanying the photograph says that the building is still at Oruaiti village.
