Little Hope

Officials of the United States delegation'to the United Nations General Assembly, who today studied the latest developments in the Berlin dispute, have little hope of agreement with the Russians.

The American spokesman said the American delegation had received the projected currency formula from the Security Council president (Dr Bramuglia), who is spokesman for the council’s six “neutral” nations. The formula has been referred to Washington and is to be discussed by Dr Jessup, Sir Alexander Cadogan and M. Parodi.

American, British and French officials have approved, in principle, the latest suggestion from the Security Council “neutrals” that financial experts attempt to work out a plan on the Berlin currency issue.

M. Vyshinsky is reported to have agreed to this. The American spokesman said it was difficult to reconcile M. Vyshinsky’s acceptance with recent Soviet deeds in Berlin.

Under Dr Bramuglia’s plan, neutral financial experts will examine the currency problem, in consultation with Western and Soviet experts, in an attempt to find a solution acceptable to both sides.

Western quarters are doubtful of its success, because a currency agreement would be impossible to apply to a divided Berlin.
