More Building Supplies

The relaxation of some controls and restrictions that have hindered the erection of houses in the Dominion has been accompanied by news that increased supplies of building materials from overseas will be available.

Sir James Fletcher, who has just returned to the Dominion, said that as a result of negotiations, asbestos fibre from South Africa and other building supplies from Britain are to be imported into New Zealand.

Aluminium, once a scarce commodity, is the one material of which there is not a world shortage, and it is now playing an increasing part in British industry.

Its use for many purposes is saving valuable steel, and there is little doubt that its availability will contribute substantially to the speeding up of house building in this country, for shortage of internal fittings has been a delaying factor.
