Express Concern At Prison Camp Escapes
TAUMARUNUI, Sat. (P.A.).—Concern at the increasing number of escapes from prison camps in the King Country lately has been expressed throughout the district. Two organisations, the Taumarunui Women’s Institute and the Taumarunui Parent-Teacher Association, aware of the anxiety caused to women and children when prisoners are at large, are endeavouring to bring thg matter before the Minister of Justice (MiMason) .
King Country residents said that they were only too well, aware of the crimes committed by escaped prisoners.
They had not forgotten that two serious crimes, one of murder, were committed by escaped prisoners, and felt that it was unjust that women in isolated areas should be subjected to nervousness until the men were apprehended. National Park residents, who have the Waikune prison camp only a few miles from their homes, spoke bitterly about escaped men. They said that a chain of thefts had enforced restrictions on social life.
