Ruling Master Winner Of L. W. Nelson Hdcp.

PERFECT weather was again the order when the Whangarei Racing Club’s spring meeting concluded at Kensington Park today. There was sufficient cloud and breeze to relieve the intensity of the heat and a very large crowd was on the course before the programme got under way. The scene in the public enclosures was a much more colourful one than yesterday’s. Good fields in all events assured an excellent day’s sport.

The first winner of the day was the three-year-old Trench Fight gelding, My Boy, from Te Rapa, which was having its first run at the meeting. My Boy was always well placed in the first division of the Novice Stakes, entered the straight about four lehgths behind the leaders, Kaitariki and Ending, and then shot through on the rails in determined manner to give jockey Brown his second winning ride of the meeting.

Gynerium-Court Lady, 10.11 (SinIon) 3 (Winner trained by H. E. Goldfinch, at Avondale). Also started: 2-1 Cornell, 5-4 Pahlwan, 13-13 British Crown, 10-10 Autogiro, 7-7 Gay Chat, 3-3 The Trader, 11-12 Melview, 12-11 Miss Contact, 12-11 Diana’s Choice, 9-8 Red Paint, 6-0 Dark Victory, 13-15 Bnnetta. Won bv three lengths; four lengths. Time: 3.2 1-5. As was the case yesterday, Pahlwan quickly ran into a long lead from Default and Uganda. The order was the same until five furlongs from home, when Pahhvan dropped back and left Default and Uganda out in front, from Cornell and Court Lad. Default led Uganda into the straight and Court Lad finished strongly for third money. The Trader was fourth and Gay Chat fifthL. W. NELSON HANDICAP, Of £6OO. 114 miles. (5-6)RULING MASTER, C. Curtis’ blk. g., 6 yrs., Foxbridge-Ruling Spi, 8.10 (E. V. Dye) 1 (4-4) SAFFRON WALDEN, R. E. Kelly’s b.g., aged, Foxbridge-Elsie Rose, 8.0 (Scott) 2 (8-8) MAID OF SHERWOOD. Stevenson Bros’ br.m.. G yrs., Robin Good-fellow-Extravagant, 7.7 (Parker) .. 3 (Winner trained by T. F. Verner, at Papakura). Also started: 2-3 Beau Rosa, 10-9 Master Ted, G-5 White Blaze, 7-7 Jon Rosa, 9-10 Swift Quarry, 3-2 Ostentatious, 12-11 Hydrangea, 1-1 Distributor, 11-11 Master Arthur. Won by half a head; three and a-lialf lengths. Time: 2.5 4-5. Beau Rosa jumped out best, but Ruling Master soon hit the front and led past the stands the first time from Swift Quarry, Ostentatious. Master Arthur and Beau Rosa. Along the back Ostentatious followed Ruling Master and then came Master Arthur, Swift Quarry, Master Ted and Distributor, with Maid of Sherwood ninth and Saffron Walden eleventh.' Maid of Sherwood made a forward move bo • tween the half-mile and three-furlong peg, and was second into the straight from White Blaze and Swift Quarry. A furlong from home Ruling Master was two lengths clear and appeared likely to win easily. Saffron Walden then challenged magnificently, but just failed to overtake the winner. White Blaze was fourth, followed by Ostentatious, Swift Quarry and Distributor. PRESIDENT’S HACK HANDICAP Of £4OO. One and a quarter miles. (5-5) PLEASANT BAY, W. S. Gooseman’s b.g., 6 yrs, Contact-Rona Bay, 7.8 (R. Samson) 1 (1-2) DRAPER, J. Chisholm’s b.g.. 4 yrs, Tweed 11-Llanore, 7.7 (G. Hughes) 2 (3-1) TIERCEL, K. Sill’s b.g., aged, Golden Eagle-Artistry, 8.6 (S. Green) 3 (Winner trained by J. L. Muir at Te Rapa).

The second division saw the three-year-old chestnut, Bulos, score a runaway win to complete a double.

Bulos established a break of two lengths crossing the top and was this much in front when they straightened for home.

He won in a canter by seven lengths from the little-fancied Patuone, which paid over a score to those who backed him for a place. Bulos was a very short-priced favourite on the win machine, and My Boy was similarly fancied on the place. HIS THIRD WINNER The Te Rapa trainer, A. McGregor, saddled his third winner of the meeting and his second of the day when Rhonddavale completed a winning double with an 'impressive victory in the Marsden Hack Handicap. The stable apprentice, R. Brown, was again the rider. Rhonddavale lay fifth when the field had settled down and was fourth into the straight behind Silver Lap, Coruscant and Hardware. When the pressure was applied Rhonddavale quickly hit the front and was a length clear a furlong from home. The consistent Sir Sydney was second just ahead of Coruscant, which was always well placed. Rhonddavale was rather neglected by the public after his win yesterday and again paid a handy dividend.

DEFAULT’S FORM IMPROVES Improved form was shown by Default when he won the Poroti Hack Hurdles Handicap by three lengths from the Whangarei horse Uganda. Yesterday’s winner, Court Lad, lost considerable ground at the second-last hurdle and this-cost him a chance of completieg the winning double. Default and Uganda deposed Pahlwan in the lead going along the back for the second time.

There were two spectacular spills, Dark Victory coming down at the first hurdle in the straight and Autogiro crashing in front of the stands. END-TO-END WIN The top-weight, Ruling Master, scored practically an end-to-end victory In the principal event, of the day, the L. W. Nelson Handicap. The Foxbridge gelding and Saffron Walden and Jon Rosa missed the jump but Ruling Master recovered very quickly and sweeping round the turn into the straight , the first time hit the front and stayed there till the finish.

Saffron Walden, however, did not retrieve his lost ground until the last furlong.

He was a bad last going out of the straight the first time but he came home with a brilliant burst on the rails which carried him to within half a head of victory. Although Ruling Master’s success wasiull of merit, Saffron Walden must be considered unlucky not to have snatched the honours.

Maid of Sherwood moved up into second place crossing the top but weakened over the last bit and was three and a half lengths'behind Saffron Walden in third place. The favourite, Distributor, was a poor seventh. DOUBLE FIGURE DIVIDEND

Pleasant Bay paid a double-figure dividend when he won the President’s Hack Handicap convincingly from the win favourite, Draper, and the local horse Tiercel.

The winner is owned by Mr W. £. Goosman, of Auckland, who received a canteen of cutlery presented by the Campbell and Ehrenfrietd Co., Ltd., from the club president (Mr L. R. Nelson).

It was easy for Rhonddavale in the run home. Miss Maureen was fourth and then came Lady’s Bridge, Huntopay. and McWe’s Tray. POROTI HACK HURDLES, of £325. 11 miles and 282 yards. (4-5) DEFAULT, A. R.
