PARIS, Fri. (10 a.m.)—The strike position appears to be easing in France.
The Defence Minister (M. Ramadier) has expressed confidence that the position in the coalfields will be greatly improved next week. The Confederation of Labour has ordered striking miners to return to work at two pits in the Gard Department tomorrow.
The French News Agency says mine managers believe that this is perhaps a move to change the strike campaign to stay-in- or go-slow strikes, but after a conference between the Prime Minister (Dr Queuille), M. Ramadier, M. Moch, M. Pineau and the Industry Minister (M. Lacoste), M. Ramadier said the return of troops to their garrisons within a short time could already be foreseen because of the improvement in the strike situation.
French non-Communist miners’ unions promised to make an immediate appeal to all their supporters to resume work at once.
There is rising Government optimism that the strike is near its end, and officials hope this call will finally break its back.
Eighty-four per cent of the miners are back on the job in the Lorraine district, where production is 60 per cent of normal.
Engineers took possession of the last pit formerly occupied by strikers in the Loire coalfield today. The only real resistance today was at Carvin, in the Lille area, where several hundred, miners were barricaded behind iron gates.
