Australia Saves Dollars On Planes
CANBERRA, Fri. (10 a.m.) The Commonwealth Government has bought four new American four-en-gined DC.6 airliners from Sweden for £( A) 1,000,000, thus avoiding the expenditure of $3,240,000. The Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr Drakeford) said the deal was particularly favourable to Australia. Through the Swedish contract £(A)50,000 had been saved on each at the present factory price for similarly equipped planes. They were fitted with sleepers and had 48 day. seats in pressurised cabins. The planes became surplus to Swedish requirements as the result of the amalgamation of two Swedish airlines and the merging into one operating group of four existing airlines.
