LONDON.—The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir Stafford Cripps) said tin a broadcast that he was disturbed at the lag in production increase.
“Over the past two years production has gone up well and in June it was nearly one quarter higher than in 1946,” he said, “but this was largely because we had more and more people at work—over 19,000,000, compared with less than 17,500,000 two years earlier. “Unless we all cooperate in improving production methods, the only &ay out ’will be longer hours or—what is unthinkable failure to regain our economic independence.” $ * * *
