Beau Rosa First In Spectacular Cup Race

WHANGAREI RACES . . .

A PERFECT summer's day greeted patrons to the opening of the Whangarei Racing Club’s spring meeting at Kensington Park today. Actually the sun. was a little too hot for comfort, but a slight breeze tempered its fierceness. The scene in the public enclosures was bright and colourful as a large crowd assembled before the first race. The track was in splendid condition and the stage was set for a very successful meeting.

The three-year-old Takanini filly Ending was the first winner of the meeting, talcing the first division of the Maiden Stakes rather comfortably, after being prominent throughout the five-furlong journey. The win favourite Bulos smothered the opposition over the final furlong of the second division to romp home two lengths clear. FAVOURITE RUNS WILD

The Te Rapa-trained Rhonddavale, a winner at the last autumn meeting here, followed up his good track work with a clearcut win in the Kensington Hack Handicap, in which scratchings reduced the field sufficiently to permit the event being run as one race.

After a false start the field got away well, with Palwhan quickly running into a long lead from Red Paint, Black Market, Default and Uganda. Palwhan was 14 lengths clear crossing the. lop and past the stands the first time, where Melview fell jumping the fourth hurdle. Along the back Cornell and Gay Chat improved their positions and set out after the leader. Court Lad put in an appearance three furlongs from home and. with Cornell and Gay Chat, challenged Palwhan. It was a good run to the judge. Gay Chat was fourth. Next to finish were Default. Modern View, Red Paint, Uganda and Miss Contact. WHANGAREI CUP HANDICAP

Rhonddavale was in the ruck for the first two furlongs but moved up quickly crossing the lop and was three lengths clear into the straight. Nothing looked like wiping off this advantage.

The favourite, Lady Finis, ran very wide at the turn into the straight when well placed. Rhonddavale returned a handy dividend to his supporters, as also did Sir Sydney which ran third.

Going past the stands the first time Ostentatious, Saffron Walden, and White Blaze were abreast at the head of the field followed by Beb. Distributor, Beau Rosa. Ruling Master, and Kyrat. Along tlie back the three leaders were still abreast,. three lengths clear of Saffron Walden. Beb. Beau Rosa, and Distributor. Ruling Master assumed command crossing the top from White Blaze and Ostentatious, with Beau Rosa making a forward move. The order was the same into the straight, with Saffron Walden also close up. Beau Rosa's finishing run took him to the front half a furlong from the post and he won very nicely from Saffron Walden. Distributor was fifth behind the dead-healers and next came Kyrat, Maid of Sherwood, White Blaze, Swift Quarry and Jon Rosa. HIKURANGI HACK HANDICAP Of £375. One and a quarter miles. (7-5) LOUD CHECKS, W. Hosking’s br.m., 5 yrs, Tweed 11-Outcry, 7.8 (Mcsservey) 1 (5-7) TIERCEL. K. Sirl’s b.g.. aged. Golden Eagle-Artistry, 8.2 (S. Green) 2 (8-8) LORD JELTIN. D.A. Lusk and F. E. A perfect example of horses-for-courses was provided in the Huanui Hack Hurdles, when Court Lad notched his first win since annexing the hurdles double at the last, autumn meeting at Whangarei in March.

For most of the race Falwhan was out about a dozen lengths clear of the field, but across the top the second time his lead was narrowed and he was only a length, in front of Cornel J and Court Lad when they jumped the last hurdle. Court Lad beat Cornell in the run home. BRILLIANT HURST OF SPEED A field of 14 went to the post for the principal event, the Whangarei Cup. As expected it was a spectacular race. Ruling Master and Ostentatious were fighting out a neck-and-neck struggle 100 yards from home when Beau Rosa flashed into the picture on the outside and with a brilliant burst of speed carried the day by half a length. Saffron Walcjen also finished magnificiently for second place, about a head in front of Ostentatious and Ruling Master, who could not be separated by the judge.

The favourite, White Blaze, was nicely positioned throughout the race, but failed in the straight. The cup and the canteen of cutlery, donated by the Campbell and Ehrenfried Co., Ltd., of Auckland, were presented to the winning owner (Mr T. W. Langford, Auckland) by the club president (Mr L. R. Nelson). DOUBLE-FIGURE DIVIDEND

The first double-figure dividend of the day was returned by Loud Checks, the winner of the mile and a quarter Hikurangi Handicap. Loud Checks got away badly at the barrier but recovered ground quickly in the first two furlongs to be fifth passing the stands the first time.

Time: 2.7 4-5. Brown Velvet. Noble Artist and Tiercel were tlie first to settle down and, going past the stands, Noble Artist led bv two lengths from Lord Jcltin, Brown Velvet, Tiercel, Loud Checks and Foxlyn. The order was unchanged along the back and across the top, and at the distance Tiercel looked a likely winner. Loud Cheeks’ finishing run on the outside, however, was too brilliant for the others and she won convincingly. Tiercel was second, followed by Lord Jeltin, Pleasant Bay and Star Dink.

She was not prominent again until the last furlong when, with a thrilling finishing run, she swept Tiercel and Lord Jelton for a decisive length win. The consistent local horse, Tiercel, owned by Mr Ken Sirl. of Whangarei, held off Lord Jelton by a head foxsecond money, MAIDEN STAKES Of £2BO. Five furlongs.
