Mr G. J. Marsh, of Wellington, has been appointed Lebanese Consul for New Zealand and its island territories. The post is a new one following the recently-won independence of Lebanon. There are about 1500 Lebanese or persons of Lebanese descent in New Zealand.
The council of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry at a recent meeting in Dunedin elected Mr S. G. Brooker, of Auckland, 'a fellow of the institute. Mr Brooker is at present chairman of the Auckland branch and editor of the journal of the institute. The following were elected associates: Messrs O. J. Baker, E. G. Brooker, A. P. Camden Cooke, A. R. Caverhill, F. B. Hurst, J. S. Pollard, D. J. Ross, Wellington), L. P. J. Chapman, G. A. Nicholls, E. J. Searle and T. J. Sprott (all of Auckland), R. M. Dolby (Palmerston North), F. Hurst (Christchurch), J. D. W. Monigatti and O.’ K. Sewell (both of Ruakura), J. Murray (Dunedin).
The Rev. E. W. Hames, M.A., principal of Trinity Theological College, Auckland, is shortly to visit the Far North. He will' conduct the Kaitaiq Methodist Sunday School anniversary service on November 28. and also the Methodist Church anniversary the following Sunday, December 5.
The engineer manager of the Devonport naval dockyard. Commander (E) A. J. Norris. 0.8. E.. R.N.. is to retire from the Royal Navy next week. He has served in ships and establishments on the New Zealand station since 1937 and for the past two years he has held the post of Director of Naval Engineering in the Royal New Zealand Navy.
Regret at the retirement of Mr W. R. Wilson, who had served on the board of directors of the South British Insurance Company, Ltd., continuously for nearly 42 years, was expressed by the chairman of directors, Mr Kenneth B. Myers, at the annual meeting of shareholders in Auckland yesterday.
