Egyptian Army In Negev Destroyed,- Israel Says

LONDON, Wed. (11 a.m.). —Reuters Tel Aviv correspondent quotes the chief of Israeli military operations (Colonel Yigal Yadin) as saying that the Egyptian Army in the Negev has been completely defeated.

All Egyptian front-line aircraft have been destroyed, most of their front-line troops liquidated, and their flagship King Faroulc has been sunk.

The Paris correspondent of the Associated Press says Jewish sources there reported that Egyptians have massed armour, as if for an attempt to break out of a pocket in the Judean Hills, east of Jewish-held Beersheba. On the central front, Iraki heavy guns were reported shelling Ras el Ain, in the vicinity of the pumping station of the Jerusalem water pipeline, with Israeli artillery firing back. The Israeli Government told the acting mediator (Dr Bunche) in a letter dated today that the Security Council’s Negev cease-fire order did not imply an absolute injunction to return to status quo positions. The Government spokesman said the order made it clear that the return to the status quo ‘'might well be considered as the basis for future negotiations." Dr Bunche will refer the letter to the Security Council tomorrow.
