CREEKS, RIVERS NOT ENOUGH

Of 160 boys in five intermediate classes of the Whangarei Boys’ High School, 37 cannot swim a yard, 37 can float only, and only 37 believe they could save themselves if upset in a boat half a mile from shore. This information was gleaned in a questionnaire conducted by the headmaster (Mr H. A. Henderson). “The poor standard of swimming among the younger boys proves that creeks and rivers are not enough for the purpose of instruction,” Mr Henderson said. When baths are available at the school classes will be taught swimming daily as part of the physical education course.
