Wanganella Claims Settled Out Of Court
WELLINGTON, Tue. (P.A.)—Out of court settlement for salvage claims in connection with the Wanganella were ratified in the Wellington Supreme Court, sitting in its Admiralty jurisdiction, by the Chief Justice (Sir Humphrey O'Leary) today. A total of £74.000 was originally claimed by the Wellington Harbour Board, owners of the Toia and Arahura. the Wanganui Harbour Board, owners of the Kahanui, the Union Steam Ship Company, owners of the Terawhiti and Natone, and the Eastbourne Borough Council, owners of the Cobar.
The total sums agreed upon, with amounts already paid in parentheses, are:—
Wellington Harbour Board, £13,530 (£4500); Wanganui Harbour Board, £15.195 (£10.000); Union Steam Ship Company, £6175 (£3500). The parties are to pay into a pool £2500 for settlement of claims by the crews of the various tugs and launches. Unless a settlement is mac(e out of court in the meantime, the Eastbourne Borough Council’s claim for £2OOO will be heard on Monday.
