Severe Electrical Storm Last Night
Commencing in the south-west about 7.30 p.m. last night an electrical storm swept over Whangarei and disappeared into the north-east about 10 p.m. Heavy rain fell in strong wind squalls and eased off when the lightning passed over the town. Electric lights flickered twice in Whangarei, but there was no power failure as there was at Maungaturoto for a short period.
SHORTER AT KAITAIA A heavy electrical storm which passed over Kaitaia last might was less violent than was expected. It approached from the north-west, commencing at 7.30 p.m. and lasting for over an hour, but avoided the town area.
Most electrical installations escaped damage but there were minor faults at Ahipara and Larmer’s Road, near Kaitaia.
A complete power failure of short duration was due to a breakdown in the state hydro-electric line.
Russell Power Drops During Stprm
RUSSELL, Wed. (Sp.)—Radios and refrigerators “went on strike” and powerful street and domestic electric lights were reduced to shadows of their former selves during a vivid thunderstorm over Russell last night. Electricity voltage dropped 50 per cent, at 8.30 p.m., and was not restored to normal, until 7.15 this morning.
A lightning display, accompanied by thunder and heavy rain, lasted for part of the night, but soon passed over.
