Stonehurst As Varsity Hostel
AUCKLAND, Tue. (Sp.)An option over the largest private hotel in Auckland—Hotel Stonehurst, in Symonds Street —has been obtained by the University College Council.
The council intends to convert it into a hostel for students, at an estimated cost of £45,000.
An offer of £20,000 subsidy has been made by the Government on condition that the council provides the rest of the money for the work. Yesterday, at a meeting of the council, it was announced that a public appeal would be launched for the balance of £25,000.
Commenting on the proposal, the president (Mr W. H. Cocker) said the building was conveniently situated and about 120 students could be accommodated.
The design was such that male and female students could live in separate buildings. Mr Cocker added that every year students had difficulty in finding board, ana had to live under conditions that were not conducive to healthy living and efficient study. “The council • feels bound to make every effort to improve these conditions,” he said.
