94th Anniversary Waipu Migration
The 94th anniversary of the Nova Scotian migration to New Zealand, and the subsequent pioneering of the Waipu district, fell on Thursday. The inspiring story of these ScoL tish migrants who first left their native Scotland for Nova Scotia, and, 30 years later, came out to New Zealand, will always be an example of fortitude and endurance.
Tiie six vessels in order of arrival were the Margaret, Highland Lass. Gertrude, Spray, Bredelbane and Ellen Lewis. They were built, manned and officered by the pioneers themselves.
It was the original intention to settle on the East Coast in the Gisborne area, where the land was more suitable to the class of agriculture the settlers favoured, but the Maoris were up in arms and the Scots came to Waipu, where the Maori troubles had died down.
To this day, Waipu is considered the rallying point of all Nova Scotians scattered throughout the Dominion, and Waipu is justly proud of its historic past.
