Judge's Evidence Before Tribunal
WELLINGTON, Thu. (P.A.L—Anything calculated to derogate from the status of a judge would be much deplored, but Deputy-Judge Dalglish did not appear as a deputy-judge of the Arbitration Court when he gave evidence before the Mountpark tribunal: It was ’in his capacity as chairman of the Waterfront Control Commission, which was not a court of justice, but a body corporate. This reply was given by the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) in the House of Representatives yesterday to a question asked by Mr M. H. Oram (O — Manawatu). Mr Oram had asked whether the Prime Minister would take steps to see that New Zealand’s system of justice was not brought into disrepute by the Government’s habit of appointing persons with the appellation of judge who were liable to be required to give evidence before tribunals concerning their actions or decisions, and to be forced to submit to cross-exam-ination by Communist, near-Commun-isr. or fellow-traveller advocates
