1050 Empire Gaines Allotted To HZ.
SYDNEY, Tue.—A London cablegram published in the Sydney Sun says the next British Empire Games, to be held in 1950, have been allotted to New Zealand. Commenting on the report, an Australian Empire Games official, Mr H. G. Alderson, said that the staging of the Games in New Zealand would be a great thing for Australia, which would be able to have a big representation. Its athletes would be able to do most of their training in Australia and then fly across the Tasman and arrive in first-class condition.
He added that Canada had applied for the 1950 Games and that it was a surprise that they went to New Zealand. (“I am very pleased that New Zealand will have the opportunity of staging the Games,” said Mr A. Moon, president of the Auckland centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, when the cablegram was referred to him last night. He said both Christchurch and Auckland had applied for the Games.) The Sydney Daily Telegraph also publishes a cable from London saying that the 1950 British Empire Games will be held in New Zealand. The cable adds that the Empire Games Committee decided this by 11 votes to two. The committee rejected Canada’s claim that the games should be held in that Dominion. NO OFFICIAL ADVICE The New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association has received no official information about the allocation of the next Empire games to New Zealand. Stating this the chairman of the association (Mr H. I. Austad) added that it was known that the matter was to be discussed by representatives ol the British Empire Games Association at a special meeting during tiic Olympic Games.
