Rotary Club Plant's 1948 Hospital Tree

Friendship Avenue at the Whangarei Hospital had another pohutukawa tree planted in it when the president of the Whangarei Rotary Club (Mr J. P. Woods) performed the annual ceremony yesterday. Members of the Whangarei Hospital Board attended the planting.

Mr Woods said the idea of the friendship tree was first thought of by the late Mr W. U. Timewell. All trees for planting by the Rotary Club in the hospital grounds had been provided by the late Mr Timewe'lj and were now being donated by his son, Mr Eric Timewell. Since 1932 the club had planted one tree annually. The chairman of the hospital board (Mr J. A. S. Mac Kay) expressed his and the board’s gratitude for the work the Rotary Club had done and was doing. “The annual tree planting is one of the few rays of sunshine connected with hospital work during recent years, and it is much appreciated,” he said.
