Butcher Fined For Preservative Breach
For selling sausage meat which contained a greater proportion of the preservative substance sulphur dioxide, or sulphites calculated as such, than is permitted in sausage meat, Louis Martin, butcher, of Hikurangi, was fined £2, plus analyst’s fee 10/6, costs 10/and solicitor’s fee 10/6 by Mr W. C. Harley, S.M., at the Whangarei Court today.
Martin pleaded guilty. Mr L. A. Johnson, prosecuting, said the offence was looked upon as a very serious one by the authorities, a second offender being liable to a fine up to £2OO.
The magistrate asked if the sample of the meat taken was poisonous. Mr Johnson replied that it was, add' ing that he was a matriculated student as far as science was concerned. “Well, so am I,” rejoined Mr Harley.
