Codet Courses Like Boarding School
Changing. conditions in the new Army were discussed by the assistantdirector of Army Education and Welfare (Captain S. H. Johnson), who is touring .Northland, interviewing applicants for cadetships in the permanent army.
The present intake of 92 will be mainly apprenticed to tradesmen as they would be in a civilian job, with the difference that the cadets will spend 50 per cent of their time :m study, 35 per cent on trade training, and the remainder on military training including physical and recreational training. At the end of the eight years’ initial engagement the cadets will have the option of leaving the service with higher qualifications than they would have gained in a private apprenticeship. or staying in the army until they reach the age of 45. Educational instructors at the army school are all experienced teachers with army service as well, and the cadet courses will be run on similar, lines to a boarding school. Captain Johnson himself is a Northlander, having been educated at the Whangarei High School. He served overseas as an infantry officer and was a prisoner of war.
