Mr W. T. Simons

OBITUARY

The death occurred at his residence. 10 Mains Avenue, Whangarei, today of Mr William Thomas Simons. Son of the late Mr and Mrs W. H. Simons, Mr Simons was born in Russell in 1871. He joined the Manawatu Railway Company as an office cadet in 1886, when the company was privately owned.

He served the company for 25 years, eventually becoming stationmaster at Wellington. Mr Simons was married to Miss Annie Windust, second daughter of Mr- and Mrs T. W. Windust, of Wellington, in 1898. The marriage took place at the Presbyterian Church, Palmerston North.

When the Government purchased the railway company, Mr and Mrs Simons came to Whangarei. where Mr Simons commenced his aerated water business in Vine Street in 1911. During the First World War he managed McMahon’s Hotel, now the 'Whangarei Hotel. In his younger days Mr Simons was a keen athlete, and later became interested in fishing and gardening.

RECENT; ANNIVERSARY On April 14 Mr and Mrs Simons celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. On that day, also, the children of their youngest daughter and youngest son were baptised, and the engagement of their eldest son’s second daughter announced. Two days before this, Mr and Mrs J. Walker held their golden wedding anniversary. Mr and Mrs Walker are the parents of Mr Alfred Walker, whose wife is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Simons.

Mr Simons is survived by his wife, two sons, Messrs W. 11. Simons and E. G. Simons (Whangarei), and five daughters, Irene (Mrs C. T. Perry. Australia), Phyllis (Mrs A. Walker, Onerahi). Madge (Mrs M. Collins. Whangarei), Elva (Mrs T. G. M. Lee, McLeod’s Bay), and Miss Thelma Sifnons (Whangarei).

There are 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
