Surprise
* * * * Mangonui Rugby
The only surprise in Mangonui Rugby football circles on opening day last Saturday was Aupouri’s runaway 44 —o victory from Doubtless Bay at Te Kao in the Senior A series. It was not surprising from the viewpoint'that Aupouri, welded from the two former clubs of Te Hapua and Te Kao, have possibly the best choice of material in the Far North if only Joe Murray can weld them into an efficient machine.
It was, however, a severe blow to Doubtless Bay, newly-formed senior team, which held high hopes of success this season. For them the game was an .unhappy interlude in the 120mile round trip from Lake Ohia to Te Kao, Aupouri’s home ground. Other clubs have welcomed the fusing of Te Kao and Te Hapua if only because it has obviated the long journey to Te Hapua for home games at that centre, which is only a few miles from the North Cape.
Southern Mangonui clubs last season visiting Te Hapua either left home in the small hours or made the journey a week-end outing, travelling by bus over unmetalled roads and concluding the outward run by launch across the Parengarenga Harbour. One bridge on the Parengarenga road last year failed to stand the strain of a bus loaded with footballers and collapsed.
