P APARO A i ■{ A short concert programme and an interesting travel talk were features of the Paparoa institute's 17th birthday meeting. Mrs S. T. Dodds, who presided over a large attendance, welcomed several new members.
Mrs F. Brodriek was proposed as delegate to the W.I. conference at Wellington early in August. Mrs E. A. Fenwick volunteered to pack *the monthly food parcel for Britain. Winners of the past year's competitions were: Best bloom, Mrs T. W. Wright 1, Miss S. Cliff 2. General competitions, Mrs S. T. Dodds 1, Mrs J. Mcßeth 2. Concert items were: Scottish songs by Mesdames T. W. Wright and G. J. Dennis; pianoforte duets by Mesdames E. A. Fenwick and M. M. Skelton, and choruses 6ung by Mesdames F. Brodriek, R. C. Cliff and A. McConaughy. Mrs G. J. Dennis gave an interesting account of a hiking tour from Glasgow to Loch Lomond, typical of those undertaken by various Scottish youth-movement groups. Mi’s Milne senr won a mystery parcel competition organised by Mrs J. Wilson. The birthday cake was cut by the oldest member present (Mrs K. Massey).
OROMAIIOE At the monthly meeting of the Oromahoe Maori Women’s Institute, Mrs Jenkins presided over a good attendance. The roll-call, “A childhood remembrance,” brought forth many amusing incidents. Mrs M. Hepi was appointed secretary in place of Mrs D. Yearbury, who has left the district. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to Mrs Yearbury for acting as secretary since February. A very interesting demonstration of match work was given by Mrs A. Halliday who was heartily thanked. Members are looking forward to visiting the drama festival in June. Results of competitions: Arranging flowers in a pickle jar. Mrs Tane 1, Miss M. Apiata 2, Mrs Halliday 3. April competition: Flourbag garment, Mrs Yearbury 1, Mrs Tane 2. RUATANGATA At the April meeting of the Ruatangata Women’s Institute, Mrs Cossill presided over an attendance of seven members. Consideration was given to remits for the federation meeting. Mrs Cossill won the competition for the best bloom. Miss Johnstone gave a talk on her South Island holiday. Mrs Cossill spoke of her experiences during a trip to the Dunedin centennial celebrations. The hostess was Mrs Yates.
