Shooting Seagulls

KAITAIA. Fri. (Sp.)—Callous vandalism of the worst type has been reported on Ninety Mile Beach where, on recent week-ends, large numbers of seagulls have been found shot. Instances have been reported from between Ahipara. at the southern end of the beach, and Waipapakauri settlement. and also north of Waipapakauri to Flukatere.

Many gulls were found killed outright and others left wounded or in a dying state. At the southern end of the beach rifles were used, but further north the weapons employed were both rifles and shotguns. Birds were seen shot by rifle bullets and empty shotguns cartridges were also found where dead and wounded gulls were observed. FROM CARS As some instances were noted prior to the'opening of the game season, it appears that the vandalism could have been associated with pre-season duck or pheasant shooting. Indications were that the gulls were indiscriminately slaughtered by “sportsmen" traversing the beach by car.

The offences are difficult of detection.

Complaints have been lodged with both the Police Department and with the Mangonui-Whangaroa Acclimatisation Society.
