SPECTACULAR BATTLE ON TRICKY WICKET

AUSTRALIANS WIN

LONDON, Thu. (10.45 a.m.). —Australia snatched a fourwicket victory over Yorkshire after a spectacular battle on a tricky, turning wicket. With five wickets down for 20 in Australia’s second innings and the bowlers getting spin, kick and skid on an unpredictable pitch, defeat for Australia seemed possible.

Harvey and Tallon, however, shouldered the burden resolutely" and fought hard for runs.

Harvey was missed at 12, but the life invigorated him and his winning hit was a mighty six over the long-on boundary. Miller was Australia's stand-by in the first innings. He made a hard-hit 34 to give his side a lead on the first innings.

The Yorkshiremen again found W. Johnston and Miller difficult to play on the bad wicket, and the county was all out for 89 in the second innings.

All the batsmen struggled for runs on a pitch equally as difficult as when Australia was batting. Johnston and Miller shared Australia’s bowling honours with bags of 10 for 40 and nine for 91 respectively for the match.

Harvey and Tallon met the challenge with dogged defence. These two picked the right ball to hit, and finally, when within three runs of victory, Harvey belted Smailes for a magnificent six to win the match. YORKSHIRE First innings: 71. Johnston sometimes was practically unplayable. Australia was left with 60 to win, but lost the wickets of Brown, Morris and Miller in the first 20 minutes for 13 runs.

Hamence, Hassett and McCool followed in quick order, and Australia was then six for 31. Sellers, scenting a win, drew the cordon of fieldsmen closer and closer to the batsmen, but
