On one hand we have just had Mr Skinner telling us in Kaitaia that he will be compelled to take land because

soldiers are not being settled fast enough, and on the other we have the
North Auckland Land Board preventing the settlement of soldiers. On a property just, released, a soldier with his own cattle, sheep and capital was turned down and the property divided between two civilians, both of whom already hold economic units. The reason given is that the property was an uneconomic unit on its own and the soldier could not make good on it without using a part of his father’s property, which is available to him, as a winter run-off. Yet that is exactly what they have permitted the two civilians to do—use it for a winter run-off for their properties. The uneconomic unit gag is just so much eyewash as three identical properties—one on either side and one opposite—are all good paying propositions. The soldier who wanted the property has made his own capital from identical country since he was first able to sit a saddle, yet he is told through the North Auckland Land Board, by a Government valuer, that the property is uneconomic. We in the north elected Mr Doug. Kitchen to that board to watch these things and see that they did not happen, and now are awaiting explanation from him.—WALLIE HALES.
