Drennan To Be Opposed
AUCKLAND, Thu. (Sp.)—Mr A. Drennan, present president of toe Auckland Trades Council, and chairman of the New Zealand Communist Party, will be opposed at the annual election of executive officers on April 15 by Mr J. Freeman, vice-president of the New Zealand Timber Workers’ Union and of the Auckland branch. 1 The secretary of the Auckland Timber Workers’ Union <Mv F. Craig) said yesterday that Mr Freeman van commended at a well- attendee general meeting of the union on Tuesday night for his recent stand against Communist influence in the trade union movement in New Zealand. Mr Freeman is at present a delegate on the Trades Council.- He was the Labour Party candidate against Mr 11. M. Algie, M.P., for the Remuera electorate at the IS4B general election. Mr Craig said Mr Freeman was nominated by his union for tv.e presidency of the Trades- Council in a unanimous decision. Mr Drennan is vice-president of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union and of the Auckland branch, and is the Auckland member of the national council of the Federation of Labour. It was stated by the Timber Workers’ Union that the action of its delegates to the Auckland Trades Council in supporting the attitude of the Government in the carpenters’ dispute was endorsed at Tuesday night's meeting. There was one dissentient.
