Discovers Burial! Ground Of Maoris
TAUMARUNUI, Sat. (P.A.)—What is believed to be a Maori burial ground has been discovered on the property occupied by Mr Toby Stone, on the Hikumutu Road, close to Taumarunui. A year ago, Post and Telegraph men, digging a post hole, found the skeleton of a man. This week Mr Stone, while digging, unearthed a small coffin containing the remains of a child. Yesterday two more coffins with adult remains were dug up. The coffins were carved out of solid logs. The hill where the discoveries were made was formerly a look-out used by the Maoris living a mile and a half from Taumarunui. It was a vantage point from which hostile parties on the W.anganui and Ongarue Rivers could be sighted. The police are investigating.
