-A# Mow 'they f»i a ouglif A hundred and fifty years ago, cloth was such a precious commodity in England that in some places it was necessary to use armed convoys to bring it safely to the market. One of the most important market towns, for woollen goods was the city of Leeds in Yorkshire. Arul to its great Cloth Hall came the manufacturers with their pack-horses loaded with blankets and cloth from the heavy woollen district. But although tire journey was only about ten miles, it was a most precarious one owing to the thieves and footpads who infested the moors. Clolla to Leeds, lll®© So it was customary for two or three manufacturers to join forces and to employ the services of armed escorts, or gaffers as they were called, for the protection of themselves and their precious freights. It is interesting to record that a family of Tattersfields were prominent among the Yorkshire Woollen Manufacturers of those times.
