KAIKOHE. Fri. (Sp.).—An offence dating from more than six years ago was admitted by Charles James Ashby, of Kaikohe. when he was prosecuted in Mr W. C. Harley's Magistrate’s Court at Kaikohe on two counts relating to illegal possession of a rifle without having registered as the owner. Ashby was fined 10 - with 10 - costs' on the first count, of procuring the rifle, and was convicted and discharged on the second, of having held unregistered possession for more than seven days. Richard Ashby, of Oromahoe, Bay of Islands, was fined 10/-. also with 10'- costs, for having illegally delivered the firearm to the first Ashby. The offence took place on October 1, 1941, at Rotorua. Three butchers were separately charged with having kept a meat pickling preparation in containers not having the prescribed label. This type of offence has brought prosecutions! recently in the city and in other Northland centres. j The butchers were E. Morfette. of j Kaikohe. Alexander Hector Davison, j of Kerikcri, and Albert William Kenney, of Ktieo. In the case of Morfette (who pleaded guilty) and Davison, the fine was £l. with £l/0 '6 court costs.

In Kenny’s case, however, the prosecution asked leave to withdraw the charge and the magistrate allowed costs against the department of £27/10/-. also solicitor’s fee £ll.'-.

SOFT WAX SCALE Concluding a case part-heard from a previous sitting, the magistrate fined Duncan McGregor McDonald, orchardisl, of Kerikeri. £1 with 12'costs on a charge of having failed to eradicate soft wax scale from his orchard between February and July, 1947 The prosecution was brought for the Department of Agriculture by Percy Everett, of Kaikohe, who gave evidence that he had visited the orchard and warned its owner of the presence of soft wax scale. Three transport prosecutions were brought by Traffic-Inspector R. Peters. The Kaikohe Dairy Company was fined 10/- with 10 - costs for having operated a tractor on the Te Pua highway, near Kaikohe, on September 17 without having first sought the permission of the local controlling authority. the Bay of Islands County Council. The driver of the tractor, John j Ernest Vesey, was convicted and! ordered to pay 10/- costs for having; driven the tractor without the proper driving licence. Both Vesey and the dairy company pleaded guilty. George Wilson Allen, of Waimate North, who did not appear, was fined | £3 with 16/- costs, for having driven a light truck at Ohaeawai on October 24 when not holding a driver’s licence.
