Car Caught By Ahipara Tides

KAITAIA, Tuc. (Sp.)—A large saloon car which bogged down in soft sand at Ahipara on lower 30-Mile Beach on Saturday was twice covered by the tide before being recovered late on Sunday afternoon. Owned by Mr N. Kovich, of Waiharara, the car was proceeding to a portion of Ahipara settlement accessible only from the beach frontage after crossing a small stream. Normally this stream is no more than a few inches deep, but heavy rains at the end of last week raised the waters to flood level and the banks were deeply scoured. Mr Kovich's car plunged into soft sand and efforts at removal were unsuccessful until 24 hours later. The waves caused little structural breakage but the vehicle was badly damaged by salt water. It was towed to Kaitaia and will require almost complete rebuilding.
