Future Of Town Planning
Whangarei borough's future in town planning is to be discussed at a special meeting of the council. To the council last night. Mr J. W. Mawson, of Wellington, formerly director of town planning, wrote agreeing to act as the council’s consultant on this question. The town planning committee had not made a great deal of progress and the council had to decide whether it wanted town planning or not. said the Mayor (Mr W. Jonesf. tie suggested that the letter should be referred to the town planning committee for comment. Cr W. L. McKinnon considered that changed personnel on the committee had been responsible for it not functioning efficiently. He thought the question should be discussed at a special council meeting. MEETING IN JANUARY Cr H. W. James hoped that the town planning scheme should not bo abandoned and he would like to see the plan explained at a public meeting. The Mayor emphasised that he was not suggesting abolition of the town planning committee. It was a question of the council deciding what should be done.
It was decided to hold a special council meeting towards the end of January.
On Cr J. F. Johnson’s motion it was decided that new councillors and the mover should be added to the committee. making it a committee of the whole council. Cr Johnson was also added, on his own motion, to the health committee.
