Request For Price Control
CANBERRA, Wed. (1 p.m.).—Utter nonsense has been talked in Parliament about the Federal Government’s request for price control powers, said Mr Chifley during the second reading debate on the Rent and Prices Bill in the House of Representatives. The bill seeks to amend the constitution to enable the Commonwealth to legislate on rents and prices, including charges. “The Government will seek these powers by referendum only because the states are not prepared to control prices and without control there would be chaos within a week,” he said.
“We believe, whether or not people agree, that they should be protected against inflation which is one of the greatest economic evils.”
There were three reasons for the bill:—
(1) That the states had failed to do their job. (2t That the people must be protected from racketeers. <3) That inflationary tendencies must be checked.
The bill has now passed the House of Representatives.
