Fat Lamb Premium
HAMILTON, Mon. (Sp.l—The offer of a premium for fat lambs delivered early to the works was general and did not apply only to those areas where the cooperative organisation was operating, said the chairman of the action committee of Federated Farmers (Mr R. G. Buckleton) on Saturday. He withdrew the statement he made earlier that the payment of Ad per lb above the price fixed by the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board could only be construed as an attempt to smash the cooperative pools. It was clear that it paid some operators to offer a premium in the early part of the season in order to relieve the pressure at the peak period. The withdrawal of this premium might present a problem as the season progressed. Mr Buckleton said the premium was not a new idea. Under normal conditions this early lamb production entailed a modified farming procedure and increased costs of production, but in the past this meat commanded stronger competition on the world’s markets.
