Careful Watch On Ships At Sydney
SYDNEY, Mon.— Following the decision of the New Zealand Health Department to close all schools in the North Island because of the infantile paralysis, Commonwealth health officers in Sydney will watch aircraft and ships entering Australia from the Dominion, to check on suspects. A senior medical officer said that the precautions would be strengthened, although normally there was no ratine inspection of arriving passengers.
The last infantile paralysis epidemic in Australia began toward the end of 1945, and reached its peak in May, 194(1, in which month ,200 cases were reported. It ended in November, 1946, after claiming nearly 1400 victims. The medical officer of health at Auckland (Dr L. S. Davis) said last night that there was no embarkation examination of passengers leaving Auckland for overseas, but known contacts of infantile paralysis cases would not be permitted to leave New Zealand until their 14 days’ isolation period had passed.
