Plane Backed-Up In Test Flight

NEW YORK, Sun. (10 a.m.)—The pilot of a Douglas transport aircraft simultaneously reversed all four engines in the first test of “backingup” an aeroplane in flight. Herbert Fischer, chief test pilot of the Curtiss Wright Corporation, made the test at 12,000 ft when the aircraft was flying at 150 miles an hour. The reversing propellers reduced the aircraft’s speed rapidly and demonstrated that this operation would facilitate forced landings, he said. Reversing all propellers simultaneously had not been tried previously, for fear the aircraft would stall and crash.
