Truman Noes Purchase Ban Against Russia
WASHINGTON, Fri. (10 a.m.). —President Truman todaydeclared himself against any ban being imposed on Russian purchasing in the United States.
He was asked at a Press conference to comment on the fact that Russians were buying a considerable quantity of heavy machinery in America at a time when there was heavy domestic and Western European demand for such goods. The President pointed out that Russia needed this machinery to repair
damage wrought by the Germans —he instanced the damage done to the Dneiper and other dams —and said he saw no reason for calling a halt to such transactions.
Kis statement came at a time when a strong appeal has been raised in Congress for such a ban, and discussion of economic sanctions has taken place.
