Glading’s Hard Fight In Match Play

NEW PLYMOUTH. Wed. lSp.L—The weather broke at the New Zealand golf championship at New Plymouth yesterday with a hard north wind and heavy rain in the afternoqn. The big surprise of the first round of match play among the amateur qualifiers was the heavy defeat of D. L. Woon, of Marlborough, the New Zealand representative player, by D. V. Sutherland, of New Plymouth. Winner of the open title, R. H. Glading, of Titirangi, had a hard fight with T. P. Jones. Taumarurjui.
B. M. Silk, of Wanganui, beat the Australian, K. D. Pix, .3 and 2 and the other three Australians. R. S. Brown, W. A. Edgar and A. H. Colledge, entered the second round. The Whangarei professional, J. Galloway, scored an easy win over J. K. Waite (Auckland) in the first round in the morning but went down to J. Weir (Grange) in the afternoon 2 and 1. Semi-finalists among the professionals are the three Aucklanders, Murray. Guy and Weir and Shaw, of Miramar. Two wonderful recovery shots by' Murray in his match with Dyke were highlights of the day.
