Private Valuation Well Below Crown
KAIKOHE, Wed. (Sp.).—Chairman and member, counsel and valuers, Press and public—all' were duly astonished to hear details of a case called before the Northland Land Sales Committee at Kaikohe yesterday. The private valuation was little more than half the Crown valuer’s figure.
In this case, with asked price at £1896, the Crown Valuer (Mr L. B. Shalders, of Kaitaia) had set his figure at £1652. When Mr A. Faithfull. of Okaihau, was asked a valuation for the contractual- parties, he returned the startling figure of £995. After the case had been called to hearing yesterday, the Crown representative (Mr J. B. Rowe) discussed thing's with Mr Shalders, who later agreed to reduce his valuation to £ISOO. It was at this figure, £ISOO, that the committee gave consent for the sale to go through. The chairman said the land sales committee had made it a practice not to go below the Crown valuer’s figures in their judgments, and he considered that policy should be adhered to even now. when the advantage lay the other way.
