Serving Officer Criticises Minister
LONDON. Sun.—The appointment of Mr Emanuel Shinwell as Secretary for War was “an insult to the Army,” said Lieutenant-Colonel W. M. F. Vane. Conservative M.P. for Westmorland, in a speech at Kendal last night. He added: “It is quite wrong for a serving officer to criticise the Secretary for War, but in this case if he prefers a charge against me under the Army Act I say now I don’t care two hoots.” Colonel Vane is second-in-command of the sixth battalion, Durham Light Infantry. Those who thought Britain was again turning to the Right were mistaken, said Mr Shinwell at the annual conference of the Scottish Labour Party at Dundee. The country needed a stronger turn to the Left. Without it Britain's situation in the next few years would be more serious still.
Effective reconstruction in Europe was possible there only on the basis of a large measure of Socialism.
