England Seen As Hope Of Europe

WASHINGTON, Oct. 25. “An indomitable will and dogged determination to re-establish England’s economy that augurs well for the whole of Europe.” was seen by the Armed Services Committee of the House of Representatives in the course of its recent foreign tour.

Submitting its report today, the committee, which was led by Mr Dewey Short (Republican—Missouri) stated: “England, with characteristic tenacity and vigour, is making every effort to maintain herself as one of the world’s great powers. In spite of the nationalisation of certain of her- industries, the spirit of individuality is still strong.”

Commenting on Britain's austerity programme the committee said: “Austerity is no adequate substitute for production. Increased production in England and other countries is the key to recovery and world peace.” Reporting on other conclusions reached, the committee stated that it was imperative that the United States be strong on land and sea and in the air.

TRIESTE “POWDER KEG"

“It would be supreme folly,’ it added, “for our nation to reduce its armed forces at this critical moment in world history.” There was no doubt that the Trieste area might well be a powder keg, the report said, and added: “It demands very careful observation by the United States. The present policy of standing firm on previous agreements and treaties should be maintained.”

The committee reported that the mere presence of United States troops had obviously done much to reassure the people of the occupied zones that the United States was vitally concerned with their welfare and their problems.
