RV TEAM AT MAUNGAKARAMEA
Northland’s customary Labour weekend rain marred the annual visit of the Auckland RV club team to MidWestern.
There was no play yesterday on what was to have been the first of a two-day match against the MidWestern representatives at Maungakaramea.
On Saturday, however, the visitors enjoyed an outing against the MidWestern Bs.
The wicket played splendidly and the outfield was fast. RV batted first for 170 and, at slumps, the home side had notched 108 for six wickets. The game ended in a draw. The first three visiting batsmen, Simpson, Metge and Cleal, played attractive cricket, scoring freely all round the wicket. Cleal retired and Ilooton showed more than average ability. but the remainder of the batsmen were unable to maintain the high standard.
Chief thorn in their side was 16-year-old Ross Woolhouse. This youngster sent down 16 overs of very good length, with a littlb turn both ways, and finished up with the fine figures of five for 45.
He was the only Mid-Western bowler who really caused the Aucklanders any trouble.
Jack James and Colin Thorne, the opening bats, gave the home side an excellent start by putting on 65 runs in 75 miiiutes. Both batted steadily until Hooton got one past James’ defence.
Steedman and Woolhouse shaped confidently, but wickets were tumbling in the closi/ig stages. Best performances were:
R.V. 170 (H. SimDson 41, C. Mclge 20. I. Cleal 45 retired. G. Hooton 23: R. Woolhouse 5 for 45).
Mid-Western B 108 for G wkts (J. James 25, C. Thorne 32. R. Steedman 13, R. Woolhouse 12; Hooton 2 for 9. Cleal 1 for 25. Metge 2 for 14, Gow 1 for 10).
